3 Jamaican athletes to compete under Bahrain’s flag

Three Jamaican athletes have filed requests with the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association to switch countries and represent Bahrain at upcoming international competitions.

Shericka Williams, Kemarley Brown and Andrew Fisher have submitted requests that are being reviewed, a JAAA spokesperson told Efe in a phone interview Wednesday.

Williams was a silver medalist in the 400 meters at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing; Brown’s team won the gold in the 4 x 100 at the 2011 CARIFTA Games; and Fisher won the 100 meters at the 2013 Central American and Caribbean Championships in Athletics.

Athletes must wait more than a year once their requests are approved by the national organization and the International Association of Athletics Federations, or IAAF, before representing a new country, Jamaican media reported.

If their requests are approved soon, the three athletes could represent Bahrain at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. EFE
