MIDDLE EAST. Aéroports de Paris Ingénierie (ADPI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aéroports de Paris, has won a contract to oversee the modernisation and expansion of Bahrain International Airport.

The Bahrain Ministry of Transportation and operator Bahrain Airport Company selected ADPI following an international call for tenders. The contract is expected to generate €25 million in revenues for ADPI.

ADPI will design and supervise construction of a new passenger terminal of more than 150,000sq m, with work beginning later this year. The facility is expected to be completed by late 2018.

The airport will have capacity for 13 million passengers a year once the expansion is completed, compared to current annual traffic of nine million passengers.

Bahrain Airport Company CEO Mohamed Yousif Al-Binfalah said: “The development plans we have in place are essential for stimulating the growth of the aviation and logistics sectors as well as the overall business scene in the kingdom.

“By improving the travel experience and creating more business opportunities with a mixture of aeronautical and non-aeronautical services, we strive to increase the airport’s profitability and enhance its contribution in the local economy. With ADPI’s vast experience and track-record of achievements, we are confident that we will create ideal solutions to serve the airport’s development.”

Before it begins the construction work, ADPI will conduct studies on the development of the airport over the next twenty years. This includes determining airport functional zones, performing related financial assessments, and evaluating traffic and environmental impact, as well as providing preliminary specifications for work on associated infrastructure, roads, and utility connections.

The design studies must allow the development and adaptation of the airport site to future growth as well as the possible relocation of activities to a new airport with greater capacity in around 20 years.

ADPI Chief Executive Officer Guillaume Sauvé said: “The international airport is of fundamental importance to the kingdom of Bahrain. Over the last few decades, the kingdom has become a major centre for finance and trading.

“Valued at over €500,000, this initial phase of airport modernisation is considered to be the largest Bahraini project now under way. Therefore, this is a major contract for ADPI.”
