AFIP asks to bar HSBC’s Martino from leaving country

Amid Argentina’s dispute with the HSBC, accusing the banking entity of aiding tax evasion via Swiss accounts, the AFIP tax bureau filed a request demanding CEO of HSBC Argentina Gabriel Martino to be barred from leaving the country.

According to judicial sources, Judge María Verónica Straccia said Martino will have to request a special authorization if he decides to travel abroad, explain the reason of the trip and provide information on the destination, the accommodation and the time he will remain abroad.

The judicial move by the office commanded by Ricardo Echegaray comes after it was known Martino could change his position in the bank to move abroad, posing a risk of escape. The AFIP also referred to the Central Bank to have the entity review Martino’s position.

In November last year, Argentina charged HSBC with aiding more than 4,000 clients to evade taxes by stashing their money in secret Swiss bank accounts.

The AFIP said it received the information on the secret accounts from France, which has placed HSBC’s Swiss private banking arm under formal investigation for possibly aiding tax evasion.
