Fuel to the fire or just a friendly visit? Maybe a little of both.
It’s been widely reported that two-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso may take a one year off from F1, joining the ranks of the WEC with presumably the Audi LMP1 program.
We still don’t have any solid confirmation regarding his 2015 plans and a stroll around the Bahrain paddock is only muddying the waters for those trying to figure it all out. He seems close to a deal with McLaren-Honda in Formula One, but the WEC rumors presist nonetheless.
He told curious reporters at the circuit that he just wanted to see his ‘old friend’ Mark Webber, who now drives for Porsche after retiring from F1 competition last year. He talked to a number of people and also spent a good amount of time with the AF Corse guys.
Should Alonso make the move to McLaren, he would displace 2009 World Champion Jenson Button, who could then follow the Aussie’s path and join the pinnacle of sports car endurance racing himself.
