Washington, DC, United States (4E) – Human rights group Amnesty International USA urged Washington to act against repression in Bahrain, one of the allies of the U.S. in the Middle East.
Suzanne Nossel, executive director of the group, said U.S. President Barack Obama should let Bahrain know that he will not support repression.
Nossel said the U.S. had raised concern over the repression but failed to make action that somehow enabled abuses in the Persian Gulf state.
AI USA also accused the government of Bahrain from reneging on its promise to free political prisoners, investigate torture allegations and implement other reforms as recommended by a commission that investigated a crackdown on protests.
The group claimed that repression even spiraled, protests were banned and opposition figures were stripped of citizenship.
Bahrain denied the accusations on Tuesday and said it implemented reforms such as retraining police and dropping charges against hundreds of people. It also justified the ban on protests saying it protects the lives of policemen.
