The first Bahraini to visit Antarctica was, to the best of my knowledge, Adnan Al Qassab along with two or three companions whose names I do not recall. This took place some years ago. Since then a number of others from Bahrain have visited Antarctica including my wife and myself in 2008.
I should like to point out that as per the itinerary of the International Antarctic Expedition 2013 they will be visiting the Antarctic Peninsula and not venturing near the South Pole. The South Pole is some 1,500km distant. During the summer the average temperature in coastal regions of Antarctica varies between +5C and -5C.
While Amal Al Saffar will not be the first Bahraini to visit Antarctica she will be joining a very small group who have done so.
