Manama — A Bahrain court on Thursday sentenced three defendants to death and jailed seven others for life after convicting them of killing three policemen, including UAE officer First Lieutenant Tareq Al Shehi in March 2014.
The court also stripped eight of the defendants of their Bahrain nationality over the March 3 bombing in Diah village near Manama.
Last year, the police released the names of the four main suspects, three of whom are Abas Jameel Taher Mohammed Al Samea, 25, sentenced in absentia to five years in a previous terrorism case, Ali Jameel Taher Mohammed Al Samea, 24, sentenced in absentia for five years in a prior terrorism case and Taher Yousif Ahmed Mohammed Al Samea, 22. Later the fourth suspect, Sami Mirza Mushaima, 40, was arrested.
Apart from the four main suspects, the Interior Ministry arrested 26 people directly and indirectly connected to the case.
The statements of the police indicate that their roles varied from bomb making, to monitoring and photography. It was learned that other key actors were responsible for luring the police to the scene.
The blast occurred at the end of the funeral of a person who died of sickle cell anemia complications. Groups of rioters broke away from the main funeral route in Diah and headed to Budaiya Road. They engaged in rioting and vandalism including blocking roads and attacking police. As police were dispersing the group, a bomb that had been placed near a lamp post on Budaiya road exploded and killed the three policemen. Two other blasts in Daih followed shortly thereafter.
