A young designer who has taken the New York fashion scene by storm says she was inspired by her upbringing in Bahrain.

Misha Nonoo, 27, was born in Bahrain and raised in London by an Iraqi father and English mother.

As a child, she travelled around the world, including Europe, India, Asia and the US, but she says it was the trips to the traditional Bahraini suqs that influenced her designs.

“I guess you can say that I decided to become a fashion designer during my early years in Bahrain, trips to the Arabian suqs were a routine, exposing me to the most beautiful vibrant colours, which is why colour is the main focus for me in each collection,” said Nonoo while talking to the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

“Growing up in Bahrain, I’ve always been drawn to a vibrant colour palette and rich textures.

“I infuse that appreciation of colour and beautiful fabrics with each of my collections.

“It would be a dream come true to one day see someone in Bahrain wearing pieces from my label.”

After graduating from London’s prestigious European Business School, Nonoo moved to New York to start an internship with a local tailor.

In 2009 she launched a jacket and coat label named Nonoo Lyons and two years later, in February 2011, she launched her own fashion label, Nonoo, during New York Fashion Week.

Last September, the designer debuted her Spring 2014 collection and first runway show at New York Fashion Week, which she received rave reviews for, with one critic naming her “a premiere designer on the vanguard of the future of US fashion”.

Although her label is still new, Nonoo hopes to one day open a store in Bahrain.

“I’ve always adored Villa Moda and J Boutique in Bahrain. It would be a delight to see my collection stocked in either of those stores,” she said.-TradeArabia News Service
