Bahrain finds pork and horsemeat in imported beef
Thursday August 01 2013
Bahrain is stepping up controls on meat imports after a Health Ministry investigation found more than 20 beef products adulterated with pork or horsemeat.
A probe launched in the wake of similar scandals in the EU and South Africa looked at 172 meat products. DNA analysis revealed that 16 contained traces of horsemeat, while a further six contained some pork – consumption of which is strictly banned under Islamic law.
