Bahrain hopes for quick end to Gulf standoff

Sunday, March 16, 2014

DOHA – The Bahraini government on Sunday expressed hopes that a recent diplomatic standoff between Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, on one hand, and Qatar, on the other, would end quickly.

“I hope differences between Gulf Cooperation Council brothers would be resolved cordially and as soon as possible,” Minister of State for Information Affairs Samira Ibrahim Rajab told a weekly press briefing in the capital Manama.

Rajab, the official government’s spokesperson, was quoted by the official Bahraini news agency as saying she did not have information about Kuwaiti mediation in the crisis.

“Mediations usually take time before being announced,” she added. “I hope all differences would be settled as soon as possible.”

On March 5, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain recalled their ambassadors from Doha protesting what they described as Qatar’s interference in their domestic affairs.

Some observers, however, said Qatar’s position toward political developments in Egypt was at the center of the diplomatic crisis.
