Bahrain ministry launches internal review after inmate’s death

Anti-Narcotics Directorate’s officer and policeman, as well as the lecturer were accused of beating the victim to death and remanded them in custody pending the investigation.


Manama: Bahrain’s Interior Ministry launched on Saturday an internal review after the Public Prosecution’s investigation into the beating and death of an inmate at the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre.

The Assistant Undersecretary of Legal Affairs Brigadier Mohammed Rashid Buhamood announced in a statement that the Interior Minister ordered the probe that includes  a review of all policies and procedures at the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre and full cooperation with the public prosecution. He said that any misconduct by individual ministry personnel is unacceptable and is against all principles and values.

The review was announced after the chief prosecutor and acting chief of the special investigation Unit (SIU) Ebrahim Al Kawari said that investigation has so far revealed that the person in charge of delivering awareness lectures on the harmful effects of drugs discovered that the goods given to him by an inmate’s brother contained some narcotic materials, so he informed the Anti-Narcotics Directorate.

He said the lecturer, and an officer and a policeman for the Anti-Narcotics Directorate went to the Reform and Rehabilitation Centre to examine the materials, and the two officers in charge allowed them to meet the inmate who asked for the goods.

He added that the lecturer, the officer and the policeman beat the inmate and other two detainees, which led to the victim’s death.

Kawari said that the SIU was informed about the testimonies of the two other inmates and eight guards from the Reform and Rehabilitation Centre, who confirmed the beating.
