BAHRAIN Olympic Committee acting general secretary Abdulrahman Askar attended the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) Extraordinary General Assembly held Lausanne, in Switzerland.
Accompanied by BOC International Affairs executive coordinator Ahmed Al Qarainees, Askar was among high-ranking sports officials representing different National Olympic Committees attending the meeting, which was chaired by ANOC president Shaikh Ahmed Al Fahad Al Subah.
The assembly presided with the secretary general Gunilla Lindberg giving a brief of the past years activities of the ANOC Executive Board since the last General Assembly Held in Moscow, during which Shaikh Ahmed was elected as the president.
Amongst the most notable achievements during that year was the creation of a new constitution for ANOC, which is to be voted upon during this assembly. ANOC is also celebrating the opening of its new headquarters here in Lausanne.
Also during the meetings, ANOC treasurer Richard Peterkin presented the final report, which was then verified by the legal auditor who also made a presentation to the NOC delegates.
ANOC first vice-president Patrick Hickey made a presentation on the modernization of ANOC and the activities the association wishes to work towards.
The establishment of the new headquarters in Lausanne means that the association is now in the heart of the Olympic capital and will be able to work hand in hand and forge stronger relations with the International Olympic Committee.
The issues with dealing with Illegal betting and the continuous efforts to keep the NOC autonomous are amongst the association’s top priorities. Also to organize the Olympic calendar in order to remove “clutter” and to allow for enough training time for the athletes as well as recovery time, in the goal of enhancing their performance in international games.
The constitution was voted for unanimously with only one of the attending the 201 NOC abstaining. This is a milestone for the Olympic movement from which ANOC and under the wise leadership of Shaikh Ahmed will serve all NOCs, especially the needy NOC and their athletes.
During the assembly reports from Lord Sebastian Coe the head of the London 2012 organizing committee were presented, as well as from the Sochi organizing committee, Nanjing organizing committee, PyeongChang, Liliehammer and finally the Brazilian organizing committee for the 2016 Olympic games. During the meetings Madrid, Istanbul and Tokyo gave their presentations to the ANOC executive board as well as the 201 NOC, in their efforts for their bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games.
Olympic Solidary, also gave a presentation in their continuous effort to bring NOC closer to their organization as well as to take advantage of their wide array of programs.
The Assembly ended with confirming that the next general assembly will be held in Shnag Mai, and in 2015 in Washington and finally in 2016 in Rio Da Janeiro.
