DOHA, JUN 28 –
The Bahrain government has announced to provide six months grace period to the illegal migrant workers in the country to return their respective countries. The general amnesty will start from July 1. The decision has provided relief to undocumented foreign workers including Nepalis.
Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) of Bahrain has indicated the amnesty will be granted to runaway workers and those who worked with expired or cancelled work permits.
LMRA said that the amnesty is being provided so as to allow the illegal workers to either leave the country without having to pay penalty or validate their visas for staying in Bahrain .
“We have arranged the provision where illegal migrants can use the general amnesty without having to face legal action or pay penalty,” said LMRA chief executive Ausamah Al Absi. He informed the illegal workers have been provided options to either find employers who are willing to recruit them or to leave the country after finalising their document.
Bahrain informed about the decision to Nepal government and its embassies based in foreign countries and labour attaché offices on Sunday.
Bahrain -based Nepali acting ambassador Mani Prasad Bhattarai said the illegal Nepali workers have adequate time to validate their stay. “We believe that most of the illegal Nepali migrants are working as domestic helpers,” Bhattarai told the Post, “Such workers do not come to embassy unless they face problems. So we do not have exact data on such workers.”
“The general amnesty has opened the door for us to return home,” said Rina Shrestha of Sindhupalchok, “I was unable to return Nepal due to fear of penalty and jail sentence. Now I will return at the earliest.”
The Bahrain government, however, has warned of taking action against the illegal migrants found residing in the country even after the end of amnesty period.
