Bahrain, Saudi step up fight against terror

Many more terrorists are being arrested – thanks to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain stepping up co-operation, a report said.

A joint task force was continuing its investigation into attempts to smuggle explosives and detonators into Saudi Arabia from Bahrain, Public Security chief Major General Tariq Al Hassan was quoted as saying in a report by the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

He said the smugglers had been arrested and commended the alertness of Saudi security officers.

Saudi Customs officials seized almost 31kg of explosives and detonators from a car at King Fahad Causeway on Friday.

Eleven tin-coated bags containing highly explosive RDX paste, two bags with 25 primers and a bag with a 6m detonation fuse were seized from a Ford Fusion car.

Maj Gen Al Hassan said several houses belonging to the suspects were raided and materials suspected to be explosives, mobile phones, laptops, portable hard disks, cameras, Iranian mobile phone chips and Saudi, Jordanian and Iranian currencies seized. Documents on bomb-making and military patrols were also found inside the homes.

Five more suspects have been arrested, Maj Gen Al Hassan said.

He added that security co-operation between the two countries had previously led to the successful completion of several investigations.

“Reports on security in the region indicate threats to the stability of various countries,” he said.

“This requires co-operation and co-ordination between friendly countries in the region to face the threats,” Maj Gen Al Hassan said. – TradeArabia News Service
