Bahrain is set to get one of its biggest seafronts with work on a BD5.4 million ($14.21 million) project set to begin next year, said a top official.
The King Faisal Corniche near the Bahrain Financial Harbour is being spearheaded by the Manama Municipality and work was due to begin two years ago but was stalled as work on a major road expansion project was underway by the Works Ministry.
The new state-of-the-art corniche will now be located behind the harbour because part of its current location has been used for expansion of the road.
It will have a theme park and tourist attractions, family facilities, restaurants, recreational outlets and a 1km walkway, green areas and a plants nursery.
It will be open to the public by 2015, said council acting chairman Mohammed Mansoor.
“The municipality doesn’t have the required funding for the project and this is why we have approved plans to have it tendered so work on it could start early next year for completion by early 2015,” he said.
“The new corniche will be completely different from the earlier one as it was damaged, destroyed and had lack of basic facilities.”
He explained that a part of the corniche will be managed by Bahrain Bay as part of an agreement between it and the municipality.
“The other side of the corniche nearby the Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Bridge will be handled by Bahrain Bay in line with their agreement with the municipality, so it is not incorporated in our revamp plans,” he added. – TradeArabia News Service
