Bahrain social media to come under scanner

Our Correspondent / 27 August 2014

Bahrain is considering imposing controls on the use of social media to protect security and social stability.

Director-General of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science warned in a statement on Monday on the risks of posting fabricated news or impersonating individuals or organisations online. This includes falsely claiming to speak on someone’s behalf.

In some instances, with the regional situation being what it is, this sort of activities could fall under the definition of terrorism, he added.

He urged people to be responsible when using the Internet and understand the limits of the freedom of speech.

He also encouraged everyone to respect the law as well as the traditions and ethics of the Bahraini society.
