Bahrain warns of legal action against calls to boycott polls
Our Correspondent / 1 October 2014
Bahrain has warned of legal action against calls to boycott parliamentary and municipal elections to be held at the end of November.
Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Minister, Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa, vowed on Monday to take action against calls to boycott the elections, adding that violations are being dealt with according to their nature.
“The ministry will suspend preacher who urges voters to boycott the elections”, he said, adding that other measures exceeding suspension could be taken. “
The ministry is monitoring calls to boycott the upcoming elections”, he said, pointing out that this phase has become obsolete since 2002.
The minister dismissed calls to boycott elections as being “void and rejected”, stressing the importance of voters’ awareness in ensuring democratic voter participation. He said “early elections campaigns” as being mere social activities as long as approved nominations are not announced officially.
