Bahrain witnesses runoff following 1st voting round

MANAMA, Nov 29 (KUNA) — Eligible Bahraini voters began heading to ballot stations early on Saturday in run-off elections in 34 electoral districts.
The voting is held after the first electoral round that ended with election of only six candidates out of 266 nominees, distributed over 40 districts.
Bahraini television reported that 68 candidates are vying for membership in the 40-seat legislative assembly, competing in 34 constituencies, at a rate of two per each area.
The parliamentary elections in the 34 districts are confined to two candidates with the highest number of votes, garnered in the first round.
Elections are the fourth to be held in the Kingdom since King Hamad Bin Issa Al-Khalifa launched the process of reforms in 2002. The National Assembly includes the Consultative Council (Majlis Al-Shura), members of which are appointed by the King.
A winner should garner 51 percent of the votes. In case not, a runoff is held, grouping those with the highest number of won votes.
The first round was held last week in 40 constituencies, with voting estimated at 51.5 percent. Only six nominees out of the 266 contestants won. A single one won uncontested in one constituency after his foes’ pullout. (end) me.rk
