BAHRAIN captured silver medal in the women’s team category last night in the sixth Arab Bowling Championship in Dubai, reports Patrick Salomon.
The six-game competition was completed yesterday after all five competing squads played the first three games on Saturday night.
Bahrain were already in second place overnight, and they did well yesterday to hold on to their position to claim the coveted runners-up spot.
The nationals secured place on the podium after registering a team average of 160.88 pins per game from a combined aggregate of 3,861 pinfalls from six games.
Noora Sultan was their leading performer. They had earlier claimed bronze medal in the women’s singles competition.
Noora helped lift her side in the teams’ event with a strong individual performance that included a 186.33 average and a 1,118 total.
Course
Noora’s high game over the course of play was a 246 outing she scored in the first game on the first day of teams’ action.
Fatima Khaled followed suit with a 165.83 average and 995 total. Fatima’s best over her six-game series was a 194 outing.
Former Arab champion Nadia Aqeel also contributed well to the Bahraini cause, finishing with marks of 161.67 and 970. Nadia’s best of the competition was a 180-pin performance in the fourth game.
Rounding out the scores for the nationals was Sara Janahi, who had a solid showing of a 129.67 average and a 778 total. She was one of the more consistent players in the event, with her best being a game of 136 pins on the first day.
With Bahrain’s women’s team silver, the nationals now have four medals from the Arab championship. The others include Noora’s bronze, plus a silver medal from Mohammed Sultan and a bronze from Ahmed Abduljabbar in the men’s singles.
Taking the women’s team gold medals with another dominant display yesterday were the Egyptian quartet of Hala Shaarawy, Mentallah Sultan, Sara Gamal and Hala Khafaga.
They had a 171.21 team average from a 4,109 team total.
Their victory completed a hat-trick of wins for Hala Shaarawy, who was also the women’s singles champion before teaming up with Mentallah to claim the women’s doubles crown.
Iraq captured the bronze medal after narrowly beating the UAE.
Talen Shant, Alla Abdulhussan, Lara Sarmad and Mona Khosho gave the Iraqis the final podium step after playing a 153.13 average and 3,675 total.
Not far behind them were the Emiratis, who played scores of 152 and 3,648. They were comprised of Sara Hussan, Sara Ali, Khlood Gomaa and Khlood Akram.
Closing out the standings in fifth place overall were the Oman quartet of Lila Alharthi, Siham Alabri, Shrazad Al Maskri and Ahakila Alaisari. They had a 137.67 team average from a 3,304 team total.
Also competing yesterday in the Arab championship were the men teams which got underway with their first three games. The remainder will be played today.
The championship is scheduled to conclude tomorrow with the Masters events in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
