The number of unemployed foreign workers has been increasing in Bahrain in the past few years because of an economic recession. Due to the recession, Bahrain has almost stopped recruiting manpower from a number of countries, including Bangladesh which sent a large number of workers to the Gulf country even during the world ecomonic meltdown of 2007-2008. In the wake of the recession, the tiny middle-eastern country has remarkably reduced importing manpower from Bangladesh. In the last several years it has almost stopped recruiting workers from several countries, especially from Bangladesh. Besides, a large number of Bangladeshi workers have lost their jobs in Bahraim. Thousands of Bangladeshis have become unemployed in Bahrain either for retrenchment by their employers or the employers’ refusal to renew their contract after expiry of the term of the deal. Following termination of contract or refusal to renew the same by the employers thousands of Bangladeshis have become jobless and numerous are leading an inhuman life in Bahrain. Most of the unemployed Bangladeshis are becoming victims harassment either by their employers or the police. The jobless Bangladeshis are either landing in Bahrain’s jails after being tried for illegal stay in the country or getting deported. In view of this, the Bangladesh Embassy in Manama, Bahrain, recently advised the concerned authorities in Dhaka to take a decision not to export manpower to the Gulf state, at least for the time being. Bangladesh Embassador to Bahrain Maj Gen KM Mominur Rahman has reportedly sent letter requesting the Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employement Ministry to take proper steps stopping recruitment of new workers for sending them to Bahrain in both private and government level. Addressed to Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, the Bangladesh envoy stated the plight of unemployed Bangladeshis in Bahrain and urged him to take immediate step in this regard, according to a news agency.
