BEIRUT: Lebanon has successfully blocked Bahraini efforts to halt the broadcast of Hezbollah-affiliated media outlets Al-Manar and Al-Nour, Information Minister Walid Daouk said Wednesday following his return from a meeting of the Council of Arab Information Ministers in Cairo.
“During the conference, some demanded that Arabsat and Nilesat no longer carry some media outlets … Thank God, we prevented this from happening, as these two institutions are under the Lebanese law and Lebanon’s sovereignty applies to all its media outlets,” Daouk told reporters at the airport.
The council announced Tuesday that it had referred a request by Bahrain to revoke the Lebanese Communication Group’s membership in the Arab States Broadcasting Union to the union’s General Assembly.
Bahrain’s request was also sent to the two largest satellite operators in the region, Arabsat and Nilesat, in order to review the degree to which the Lebanese Communication Group is abiding by its contracts and agreements.
Daouk said he contacted several groups to block these attempts.
