Manama- Dec1(BNA)The Supreme Council for Women today stressed the need to pass a law to combat domestic violence.
In a statement marking the 6th Bahrain Women’s Day, the council pointed out the alarming increase in domestic violence in Bahrain.
The SCW Women Support Centre reported 160 cases of domestic violence over the past three years (2010-2013).
The council said that it was sparing no effort to reduce the incidence of domestic violence in cooperation with concerned parties.
The statement stressed the urgent need to pass a legislation aimed at protecting all family members from domestic violence.
Social obstacles are playing a negative role in hampering the victims of domestic violence from reporting their cases to concerned official parties for action to be taken.
Family stability is ranks amongst the top priorities of the national strategy for promoting the status of Bahraini women’s status.
The council has lined up a series of plans and programmes aimed at protecting woman from all forms of domestic violence – whether through legislative measures, social and psychological counseling or awareness-enhancing initiatives.
