Economy on growth path

MANAMA: Bahrain’s economic growth has risen during the second quarter of this year by 5.6 per cent at constant prices and 7pc at current prices compared to the same quarter of 2013, Central Informatics Organisation (CIO) president Dr Mohammed Al Amer said yesterday.

“Bahraini economy had posted reasonable level of growth despite regional and global instability, thanks to the increase of oil and gas production, as well as the good results achieved by non-oil sectors,” he said as he released the report of the national accounts for the second quarter, issued by CIO’s National Accounts Directorate.

He said the GDP grew by 5.6pc at constant prices and 7pc at current prices, noting that the oil sector rose by 9.3pc at constant prices and 12.5pc at current prices, and the non-oil sector rose by 4.7pc at constant prices and 5.2pc at current prices.

The financial projects increased 3.6pc at constant prices and 4.2pc at current prices, Dr Al Amer said.

He added that construction sector grew by 3.6pc at constant prices and 4.2pc at current prices, while the transport and communications activity posted a growth of 5.6pc at constant prices and 7.1pc at current prices.

The manufacturing industry posted a growth rate of 4.4pc and 2.9pc at constant prices and current respectively, he added.

On the government services front, he said that they had risen by 3.3pc at constant prices and 2.6pc at current prices.
Social and personal services increased by 8.2pc at constant prices and 10.2pc at current prices, while electricity and water activities rose by 5.6pc at constant prices and 6.41pc at current prices, educational services grew by 5.9pc at constant prices and 4.9pc at current prices, and health services increased by 6.9pc and 5.7pc at constant prices and current respectively.
