Eight women among 20 held in Bahrain

Twenty people, including eight women, were arrested in Bahrain in connection with protests called by opposition groups to mark the independence day of the country on Wednesday.

In a statement, Interior Minister Lieutenant-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa appreciated the security measures taken by the authorities to curb the violence planned by the radical groups in the country. The minister visited several security checkpoints set up by the authorities for the safety of the public.

The so called ‘protest day’ passed without any major incident, except an attack on an Asian by rioters. The Health Ministry said the Asian worker was in a stable condition at the Salmaniya Medical Complex. The 29-year-old man suffered second and third-degree burns in a terror attack with firebombs in Nuwaidrat. The Asian worker was admitted to the SMC for treatment from the burns and other injuries.
