This is in response to a letter by Mae De Leon ‘Twisted logic’ (GDN, July 14), which replied to Abdulla’s letter of July 9 ‘Listen to logic’. Your analysis is flawed. You are assuming that all expats are driving cars. The problem with this argument is that the majority of 250,000 Asian expats working in the construction sector and many others do not drive in Bahrain, while most Bahraini families have one car or more.
Hence the ratio you quoted of 68.6 per cent is in line with the driving population. I am not defending Bahraini driving habits but I see that both Bahrainis and non-Bahrainis contribute equally to accidents.
There are no published statistics by nationality, unfortunately. However, approximately 35pc of all accidents in Bahrain are caused by drivers jumping red lights, swerving or following cars too closely. In my 35 years of driving in Bahrain, my cars were smashed into from the back twice while stationary at traffic lights or roundabouts. In both incidents they were non-Bahrainis.
