Pastor Maldonado aims to brush off a “complicated start” to the Formula One season and secure some points at the Spanish Grand Prix.
The Lotus driver has endured a frustrating start to the 2015 campaign with three retirements before a 15th-placed finish in the Bahrain Grand Prix last time out on April 19.
It has left Maldonado searching for his first points of the campaign as he tries to keep in touch with team-mate Romain Grosjean who has finished seventh in China and Bahrain respectively to get 12 points on the board.
Lotus switched to Mercedes power units in the off-season and Maldonado feels, despite his early teething trouble, the team will be rewarded as the season progresses.
“It was a complicated start to the season, the first four races were tough,” Maldonado said. “It wasn’t easy to be hit by other drivers for both Australia and Malaysia.
“I think we learnt a lot from the first two races however as we made a good jump in performance by the Chinese Grand Prix because we had learnt so much about our car.
“We are closer to our rivals, the teams we’re targeting for the championship, and our race pace improved significantly. It’s getting better and better.”
Maldonado secured his sole Formula 1 victory in Barcelona in 2012 so he is looking forward to at least getting some points on the board next Sunday.
“The aim is always to get 100% from the package, to know we’ve achieved the best possible,” he added. “So a win might not be on the cards just yet but we are definitely able to fight for good points.”
