GOLDEN DOUBLE!

NOORA Sultan and Yasmine Akeel yesterday again made Bahrain proud by notching the bowling doubles gold medal at the Third GCC Women’s Games, being held in Bahrain.

After their solid performances earlier, taking home the singles gold and silver medals, Arab champion Noora teamed up with Yasmine to clinch the doubles event title with combined a total of 2,390 points.

They finished ahead of Kuwaiti pair of Fatma Ahmed and Shaikha Al Hindi (2,029), who settled for second place, while the Omani tandem of Aisha Al Sibani and Nathira Al Saeed (1,963) rounded off the podium.

The top three finishers were honoured by Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) general secretary Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Games Executive Committee chairwoman Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa.

On the last day of the volleyball championship, Bahrain had to settle for third place after a 0-3 (23-25, 11-25, 18-25) losing to the already-crowned champions the UAE, who received the trophy from BOC chief executive Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

It was the second defeat for Bahrain, having suffered a shock 1-3 defeat to runners-up Oman.

In another match, Kuwait edged Qatar 3-0 for their second win after two consecutive defeats. Set scores were 25-24, 25-18, 25-16. Qatar finished last with four straight losses.

On the first day of shooting at the shooting field in Sakhir, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait shared honours.

Bahrain’s Lulua Al Zayani, Aisha Suwaileh and Sabeeka Mubarak took the 50m air rifle team gold. They were followed by Qatar and the UAE in second and third places, respectively.

Lulua (579.17 points) bagged Bahrain’s second gold in the 50m air rifle singles, with compatriot Aisha (576.24) emerging runner-up, while Qatari Bahiya Mansoor (576.21) came third.

Dana Saad (369) of Qatar then came on top in the 10m pistol singles against Bahraini Mouza Buchiri (370) and Hanadi Mubarak (379).

In the 10m pistol team section, the Kuwaitis secured first place, as Qatar came second and Bahrain were third.

Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa visited the shooting range and witnessed part of the competition.

Bahrain added eight medals to their tally on the concluding day of the athletics for the disabled championship. The athletes’ medal haul comprises two gold, four silver and two bronze.

Oman stamped authority in the javelin throws and grabbed the gold medals through Shaikha Al Hamadi (F53-54) and Rayan Abdulla (F55), UAE discus throwers Thuraya Al Zu’abi (F32-33-34) and Seham Al Rashidi (F56-57-58) topped their respective events, while Bahraini Zahra Abdulla (F37) won the shot put title.

A 200m event then rounded off the championship, with Bahrain winning all three podium places through Asma Habib (38.91 sec), Shaikha Al Haiki (42.60) and Noaf Al Kubaisi (45.03).
