Gulf Air, Bahrain’s national carrier is giving a lucky few passengers the opportunity of a complimentary upgrade from Economy to Falcon Gold class. 

On the occasion of Bahrain’s 42nd National Day, the airline is offering passengers whose birthday falls on December 16 or 17, and are travelling with Gulf Air on the same day, the free upgrade option.

“As Bahrain’s flag carrier, National Day is an important day for us and an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the Kingdom and its airline. We are delighted to take the opportunity to celebrate along with our passengers, giving those whose birthday is on the same day, an unexpected national day surprise,” said Captain Nasser Al Salmi, Gulf Air Chief Operations Officer.

Not many seemed amused, though. “Even if your birthday does fall on any of the two days, what are the chances that you are booked to fly on the day, and with Gulf Air?” asked Mohanty P., a Dubai-based Indian expat. “I don’t think it’s a big deal,” said Maryam Shikely, another Dubai resident.

But there are those that don’t find it pointless. “Of course it’s a marketing exercise, but imagine you actually getting an upgrade on your birthday – that’ll be a cool present, won’t it,” said an Arab gentleman who wished to remain anonymous.
