Iranian meddling is damaging economy warn businesswomen

Manama: Bahrain’s businesswomen have warned of the economic impact of Iranian interference in the country’s affairs.

An event, organised by Bahrain Businesswomen’s Society in co-operation with the Capital Governorate at the society’s office in Mahooz yesterday, saw members pledge their allegiance to Bahrain’s leadership and reject terrorism.

“Iran should stop its interference,” society board member Afnan Al Zayani told the GDN

“This is not healthy as it affects the security and stability of the nation and in turn we end up spending more on national security, which depletes our resources.

“As we know, this can pose a threat to our economy and we cannot afford to let this go on.”

Ms Al Zayani said that Tehran “cannot deny” it is exporting terrorism and urged Iran to act as a “mature neighbour”.

“We should be able to live in peace and harmony as Muslim nations in true spirit,” she added.

Society president Ahlam Janahi described Iranian interference as “on the rise recently”, adding that Bahrainis “rejected it completely, as it is affecting our economy”.

Last Tuesday, a terror blast in Sitra targeting policemen left two officers dead and at least six wounded.

The high-powered explosives used in the attack were identified by the authorities as “of the same type” as those that had earlier been found in the possession of Iranian-backed smugglers.
