King Fahd Causeway Authority has announced that the $44.8mn (SAR 168mn) five-year contract it awarded last week for the operation and maintenance (OM) of the Saudi Arabia to Bahrain sea link has gone to Kuwaiti firm Mudeer Contracting Co.

The deal requires Mudeer to carry out comprehensive maintenance, examination and operation of the causeway from both the Saudi and Bahraini sides, including the facilities belonging to the island’s border patrol from October.

This includes mechanical and electrical work on power stations, telecommunications and water desalination plants, in addition to inspection of bridges and columns.

Badr Al-Atishan, director general of King Fahd Causeway, said the contract was awarded to Mudeer Contracting Co. after a competitive bidding process involving a range of qualified companies.

Al-Atishan stated that some terms in the contract are targeted at improving traffic flow on the causeway and deal with the growing numbers of commuters.

“The deal will reflect positively on the services provided to commuters and enhance workflow at facilities and government offices on both sides of the causeway,” he added.

Al-Atishan indicated that the authority aims to use the latest technology to ensure high quality maintenance of the causeway and its infrastructure.
