LONDON: Bahrain yesterday said it will continue to press ahead with its landmark reforms.

The process, initiated by His Majesty King Hamad, is without precedent in the region, Interior Minister Lieutenant-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa stressed.

He is in Britain to meet top security, crime and police chiefs to strengthen co-operation and benefit from their expertise.

Shaikh Rashid said his ministry has not only implemented recommendations by the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry but also set up an ombudsman in consultation with international experts.

He held separate meetings with Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State responsible for Crime and Security James Brokenshire and MP Jeffrey Donaldson and agreed to continue high-level meetings to intensify co-operation.

He later visited Bramshill Police Staff College and was briefed on its specialised courses on police investigation and criminal inquiries.

The minister was updated on community policing and programmes to rehabilitate juveniles in society during a visit to the Irish Youth Justice Society.

Shaikh Rashid also visited the Traffic and Communications operation centre and the British Joint Centre for Crisis Management. It was agreed that a delegation from the General Directorate of Traffic will travel to the UK to benefit from its expertise in regulating traffic and easing congestion on roads..
