Dubai, 20 November 2012 –
Majid Al Futtaim Properties
, the leader in ownership, development and management of ‎shopping malls together with hotels and ‎communities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), announced today it sponsored the Regional Consultative Meeting (RCM) for Major Groups and Stakeholders in the West Asia region, which was organised by the United Nations Environment Programme on the 19th and 20th of November in Dubai.

UNEP established the Major Groups and Stakeholders Branch in 1999, to provide major groups and stakeholders with a chance of broad participation in environmental decision-making. UNEP organises annual Regional Consultative Meetings for Major Groups and Stakeholders to deliberate on key issues on the global environmental agenda. This year the focus was on the outcome of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio+20. Held last June in Brazil, Rio+20 is considered as the biggest gathering of world leaders who discussed sustainability issues. The Rio+20 outcome document entitled “The Future We Want” was agreed by more than 100 heads of state and government, and constituted a roadmap for countries and organizations to achieve mid-and long-term sustainable development objectives. This, alongside the Post-2015 development agenda, formed the focus of the discussions.

Commenting on

‘ support of the RCM, CEO, Peter Walichnowski said:

Majid Al Futtaim Properties
is a proud supporter of the RCM in west Asia, and the first and only company in the region to sponsor United Nations Environment Programme Regional Consultative Meeting. For years, we have been adopting world-class sustainable development practices in the way we build our projects and run our business. With our support of UNEP, we intend to further elevate our sustainability standards and lead by example in terms of corporate responsibility.

“Last month,
Majid Al Futtaim Properties
was the first company in the UAE to disclose its energy consumption and efficiency investments. We are also working with the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (DCCE) to become the region’s first retail company to register in the United Nation’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the United Nations’ Kyoto Protocol.”

The RCM 2012 aimed at providing an opportunity to Major Groups and Stakeholders from the region to discuss the implications of “The Future We Want” on their organisations and countries, as well as develop a regional statement to the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum, to be held in Nairobi in February 2013, immediately preceding the 27th session of UNEP’s Governing Council. This presented an important opportunity for Major Groups and Stakeholders of the region, including NGOs, academia, and the private sector to come together to discuss these key issues.

Ibrahim Al-Zu’bi,
Majid Al Futtaim Properties
‘ Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, delivered a presentation highlighting the Company’s achievements to date in sustainable development, and how it intends to achieve 15 per cent reduction in both energy and water consumption across its shopping malls and hotels portfolio in 2013.
