Flying Kiwi Mitch Evans is already showing the sort of pace that’s made him a GP2 series favourite.
New Zealand driver Mitch Evans was in sizzling form as the final testing session for the GP2 season got under way in Bahrain.
Evans set the fastest time in the morning session on Tuesday, local time, and was second in the afternoon session with only Jordan King’s lap of 1:41.494 bettering his efforts around a hot and dusty Sakhir International Circuit.
Evans, in his Russian Time car, got in 24 laps during the course of a busy day with his best lap timed at 1:41.608.
There are three days of testing in Bahrain and follows solid efforts at the first testing session in the United Arab Emirates last month by Evans and fellow Kiwi Richie Stanaway who is looking to secure a drive with the Status Grand Prix team.
Stanaway was off the pace in Bahrain finishing 17th and 14th among the 25 drivers in the two sessions with a best time of 1:42:365 over his 38 laps.
The 10-meeting, 20-race GP2 season starts on the weekend of April 17 as a curtainraiser to the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Evans, a former GP3 champion, is in his third season at this level and is seen as one of the title favourites.
