THE five-day motivation-cum-training camp behind closed doors in Subang has brought a sense of “family-like togetherness” to the national players ahead of today’s Asian Cup Group D qualifier against Bahrain at Shah Alam Stadium.
Except for training sessions at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya, the trainees were not allowed to leave their hotel for any reason whatsoever.
The camp was not only to motivate the players but also to avoid any off-field distractions which affected Malaysia’s performance in last year’s AFF Suzuki Cup.
Despite knowing the importance of the regional tournament, several players were negotiating deals with clubs while goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat took time off to announce his wedding.
Team manager Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said players were not allowed to meet family members or friends.
“The players agreed to our terms of not having contact with outsiders. I believe this move has paid dividends,” said Subahan yesterday.
“Everyone is feeling like they are part of a family. This is a good thing ahead of this crucial match.
“Except for international camps, we have never done close door camps at home. I believe our players are now motivated.”
The players spent five days listening to motivational talks conducted by Subahan while national coach K. Rajagobal touched on team tactics.
“We reminded them of the importance of the Asian Cup Qualifiers and the match against Bahrain. Although it was hard for them not to meet their families and friends, as professionals, they did not complain.
“In football, being physically prepared is not enough. A player must also be mentally prepared for matches.
“Overall, I believe everyone is prepared and focused on Bahrain. They have the desire to upset the form book and qualify for the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia,” said Subahan, a former Selangor state assemblyman.
“Our team spirit is high after the camp but we must work hard for a win tomorrow.”
“Are Bahrain better than us? It is only partly true but they have quality players. It is important to have desire and I believe our players have it and want to perform to their best,” Subahan added. By Ajitpal Singh
