NEW CLAMP ON TERROR

Manama: Bahrain is mulling more stringent laws as part of efforts to protect society from terrorism.

The issue was on the agenda of the weekly Cabinet meeting, which was chaired by His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

The session approved a draft law submitted by the Shura Council amending the law on protecting society from terrorism.

The proposed legislation criminalises the possession and acquisition of any written or printed documents that promote, glorify, justify or encourage terrorist acts.

Those convicted of these terror-related crimes would be handed a maximum five-year jail sentence.

The bill was referred to parliament for scrutiny, along with the government’s legal opinion.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa told the session they were working on new protocols to combat terrorism and extremism.
