Muscat: It was a day of emotional scenes at the Oman Bowling Centre as hosts narrowly missed out on a medal in the team bowling competition on the penultimate day of the GCC Women’s Games on Tuesday.
The Omani team, comprising Aisha Al Sibani (977), Nadira Al Said (921), Shakila Al Esari (979) and Laila Al Harthi (968) bowled excellently but were left in tears as their total score of 3,845 fell short of the UAE’s total of 3,854. The UAE took the bronze behind silver medallist Kuwait (3,935).
Meanwhile, Bahrain clinched gold with 4,313 score to extend the their country’s lead at the top of the medal standings. Oman are in the second place in the standings followed by the UAE.
On Monday, Oman won two silver and two bronze medals in taekwondo competitions. In the under 71kg contest, Zawan Zaid won silver behind Bahrain’s Fajar Ali while the two available bronze medals went to UAE’s Maitha Said and Kuwait’s Reem Khalid.
In the under 67kg event, Oman’s Riyam Zaid won silver with Ala Abdulaziz of Bahrain and Kuwait’s Batool Yaqoob taking gold and bronze respectively.
In the under 73kg event, local girl Amani Khalifa and Bahrain’s Jumana Mohammed won the bronze medals while Kuwait’s Abrar Moosa bagged gold and UAE’s Abir Rashid won the silver.
In the under 49kg contest, Qatar’s Kalssam Al Muttawa won the gold, Kuwait’s Zahra Jada won silver and UAE’s Al Ghalia Askar and Oman’s Radhiya Mohammed won the bronze medals.
On the concluding day of the games, Oman volleyball team will vying with the UAE for the gold medal. The organisers have planned a colourful closing ceremony which will be held at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex under the auspices of Minister of Sports Affairs Sheikh Saad bin Mohammed Al Mardhouf Al Saadi at 8. p.m.
