Muscat: A resurgent Oman humbled Qatar to storm into the semifinals of the ongoing GCC Olympic (Under-23) Teams Football Championship in Bahrain on Tuesday night.
According to information received here, Frenchman Phillipe Burle-coached Omanis, who lost their first match to Saudi Arabia in the three-team Group B, needed full points against Qatar to book a last four berth and the 2011 champions achieved that target in style with a 3-0 rout of Qataris.
Oman will now take on hosts Bahrain in the first semifinal today while group toppers and defending champions Saudi Arabia square off against Kuwait in the second semifinal tomorrow. The final is slated for August 26.
Against Qatar, Oman were given a rousing start with Abdullah Saleh Abdulhadi scoring the go ahead goal in the 14th minute.
Though the Qataris tried to fight back, Burle’s boys kept their cool and the slender lead till the halftime.
After resumption, Qatar tried hard for the equaliser but it was Oman who increased the lead in the 79th minute with Sami Hasani turning the provider for the Badr Naseeb to slot the ball past Qatari keeper Saoud Mubarak Al Khater.
Sami too added his name to scorer’s list when he fired home from a close range in the closing stages of the game.
