MANAMA, Bahrain — The U.S. Navy has identified a sailor assigned to the destroyer USS Farragut who died Saturday while on liberty during a port visit.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Devon J. Doyle, 21, of Alamosa, Colo., died when he fell from a hotel balcony.

Doyle was pronounced dead at the scene. Navy officials said Tuesday that the circumstances surrounding the fall remain under investigation.

Doyle joined the Navy Sept. 19, 2012. He was a damage controlman fireman aboard the Farragut, which was his first assigned ship.

The Mayport, Fla.-based Farragut is part of the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group currently deployed to the region in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Bahrain, which is home to the U.S. 5th Fleet, is a popular port to visit for U.S. Navy ships deployed to the region. The tiny Persian Gulf island nation offers a variety of recreational activities and nightlife for sailors on liberty.
