SCW welcomes Cabinet resolution on Bahrain’s reservations about CEDAW …

Manama, Mar 16 (BNA) – Supreme Council for Women (SCW) has welcomed the Cabinet’s resolution on rewriting the reservation of the Kingdom of Bahrain on provisions 2, 4, 15 and 16 of the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) Agreement, without prejudice to Islamic law.

SCW Sec-Gen, Hala Al-Ansari, commended Bahrain’s government contribution to the implementations of Bahrain’s international commitment, which is represented by the adoption of a number of resolutions by Bahrain’s government that strengthen Bahrain’s standing before the CEDAW.

She explained the Cabinet’s resolution is a positive indicator for the benefit of Bahrain in terms of starting the implementation of the recommendation of the CEDAW Committee, moreover the SCW has begun circulating the recommendations to the concerned authorities in Bahrain and has developed an action plan to follow up the implementation of the recommendations in accordance with the provisions of Islamic Sharia law, principles of the National Action Charter, Constitution of Bahrain, state sovereignty and taking into account the privacy of Bahraini society.

She affirmed that CEDAW Committee has lauded the positive developments witnessed by Bahrain regarding dealing with the CEDAW Agreement, welcoming the serious efforts toward the improvement of the policies that aim at the elimination of discrimination against women and promotion of equality between women and men.

Bahrain joint CEDAW Agreement on 18 June 2002 and entered into force on 7 July 2002.
