Sheikh Ali Salman: Death sentences in our circumstances are more like …

As Bahraini courts put two more citizens on the death row for political reasons, Sheikh Ali Salman said on his Twitter account, “The death sentences ruled in our circumstances are more like extrajudicial killing. Wise people do not base decisions on vague fundamentals”.

There are currently 7 people sentenced to death with cases related to the political crises that has been hovering over the country for over four year now. The court has dismissed their lawyers’ allegations of the use of torture to obtain confessions from the defendants. Bahrain faces wide international criticism for a tarnished record of systematic abuse and torture in prison as a method to obtain confessions.

“All abuses documented by BICI (Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry), HCHR and international NGOs happened because of the absence of democracy”, added Sheikh Ali Salman.

The prominent opposition leader and Secretary General of Bahrain’s largest opposition society, Al Wefaq National Islamic Society, was sentenced to four years in prison last June for expressing his political opinion.
