Fahed Al-Muhaisen, assistant director of projects at King Fahd Causeway Organization, has revealed that the organization is studying the possibility of creating a railway system that will link Saudi Arabia with Bahrain and Bahrain with the rest of the Arab countries.
The official assured that the study is currently under way and will be finalized by the end of 2014.
Al-Muhaisen pointed out that a committee comprising officials from the Ministry of Interior and other governmental bodies has been established to determine means of reducing congestion on the causeway linking Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
He indicated that the committee is considering efficient means of linking the two countries by sea using ships, adding that Alkhobar’s old port would be the departure point.
In the meantime, the causeway organization is working on a program, which aims to monitor the time required for travelers to finish procedures and to address the issue of congestion on the causeway.
“The causeway can accommodate more than 100,000 travelers everyday. However, the number of travelers increases almost 10 percent every year,” he added.
