A WOMAN reportedly tried to kill herself outside a Bahrain court yesterday after being remanded in custody for a second time.
Witnesses said the Bahraini tried to jump over a wall on the first floor of the Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowment Ministry complex – despite being handcuffed to a policewoman.
The officer managed to pull her back and both women fell backwards onto a bench, which collapsed.
It happened at around 11.15am and a large crowd gathered to watch as the drama unfolded.
It was the third attempted suicide at the court complex in just over a year.
The woman, who has been accused of taking part in an illegal gathering, allegedly suffers psychological problems.
She chanted political slogans as she was being escorted out of the court complex, and shouted that she did not want to return to the Psychiatric Hospital.
Charged with taking part in an illegal rally, insulting and assaulting policemen, damaging a police video camera and defaming government officials at Bab Al Bahrain, she has already spent 45 days in custody.
Her lawyer Abdulaziz Al Moosa claimed she suffered from psychological problems and therefore should not be held accountable for her actions.
A Filipina housewife also tried to kill herself in the court complex in February last year by jumping over the same wall.
It happened after her husband told her that he wanted to marry a second wife.
She escaped with cuts and bruises and was released after treatment.
Last September, a 20-year-old Bahraini also had to be given emergency medical treatment after she locked herself in a toilet and cut her wrist and other parts of her body with a sharp object.
The woman, who was later convicted of attacking policemen, became hysterical shortly before her attempted suicide and handed over a note to her lawyer in an attempt to avoid entering the court.
