This year’s Global Islamic Finance Awards (GIFA) are taking place at Manama, Bahrain, and it is expected that high level delegates from 15 countries will be attending the GIFA awards ceremony on 28 September 2015.
The coverage of GIFA winners is expanding every year, as this year’s GIFA winners come from USA, Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific. In the last four years, the GIFA top award – Global Islamic Finance Leadership Award – has been presented to political figures and royals from the countries in Asia. “Our Awards Committee discussed in its last meeting how to promote GIFA in the African continent,” revealed Professor Humayon Dar, founding chairman of GIFA. The Committee agreed that one way of doing so is by identifying and selecting a leading personality from the continent for the top award – Global Islamic Finance Leadership Award 2015. After careful scrutiny, the Committee decided in favour of a respected political figure from the African continent to receive this year’s prestigious award to become the fifth GIFA Laureate. Previous GIFA Laureates have included the likes of Tun Abdullah Badawi (former prime minister of Malaysia), HRH Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak (Malaysia), HE Shaukat Aziz (former prime minister of Pakistan), and HE Nursultan Nazarbayev (president of Kazakhstan).
This year’s participants will include a large delegation from Malaysia that is deemed as the global Islamic finance hub. Participants from Africa will include HRH Sanusi II, Emir of Kano, and CEO of FNB Islamic Banking, Amman Mohammad.
Emir Sanusi II commented, “In just 5 years, GIFA has emerged as the most sought after Islamic finance awards in the global Islamic financial services industry, and its awards ceremonies are attended by the royals, prime ministers, presidents, ministers, central bank governors and CEOs of Islamic financial institutions from around the world.”
“We welcome all our distinguished guests from around the world in Bahrain, which is indeed a global player in Islamic banking and finance,” stated Shahid Malik, co-chairman of the Awards Committee and a former British minister for international development.
