We’ve got the best dive bar in the country, and a chicken defecating during a bingo game has earned Austin this latest not-really-illustrious rankings victory.
Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon, home of the infamous Sunday night game of “Chicken (expletive) Bingo,” is the American dive to beat, according to food and drink website The Daily Meal. The criteria under consideration for the “25 Best Dive Bars in America 2015” include a good jukebox, diversions like pool (or fowl-aided bingo), cheap libations and the elusive, intangible “character.”
The honky tonk vibe, six-days-a-week happy hour and inexpensive beer helped Ginny’s slide into the top spot over No. 2, Reel M’Inn in Portland, Ore., thus escalating the Cold War of weirdness between our two cities.
Two other Austin dive bars also secured spots on the list: Deep Eddy Cabaret and Dry Creek Cafe Boat Dock.
