Top Philippine stars for Goodwill Games

Philippine basketball superstars Paul Lee, Beau Belga, Jeff Chan and Chris Tiu will take centre stage at the eighth Bahrain-Philippines Goodwill Games, scheduled to take place October 1 and 2 at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.

The popular players will spearhead the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters professional team of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) fame.

They will play a pair of exhibition games against top local clubs in what is set to be an action-packed weekend. There will also be other locally based Filipino teams taking to the hardwood in preliminary games on each night.

Lee, Belga, Chan and Tiu are four of the Elasto Painters’ more popular players. They were all members of the Philippines’ senior men’s national team at some point of their careers, while Lee and Chan were a part of the Philippine outfit that competed in the Basketball World Cup in Spain last year.

Renowned Filipino coach Yeng Guiao will head the visiting delegation. It will also include assistant coaches Carlos Garcia and Mike Buendia, who was formerly a coach at Nuwaidrat Club.

Play is scheduled to tip off at 6pm on both days.

The Goodwill Games are being held under the patronage of the Bahrain Basketball Association and are being presented by Houras Consultancy and Uniform Sports Avenue.

The event’s major sponsors are Zain, LBC, Metrobank/Nafex and Jollibee. The supporting sponsors are Robinsons Land Corp., Nescafé, LPOD, Bahay Kubo, Chukay, Casa Mexicana, G.F. Corner, Fil-Am, and Pinay Ikaw Na.

Ticket outlets and prices will be announced soon.
