Toyota Racing win FIA World Endurance Championship drivers’ title

BRITISH driver Anthony Davidson and team-mate Sebastien Buemi did just enough to wrap-up the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship drivers’ title at Bahrain on Saturday.

The win by the sister car of Alexander Wurz, Stéphane Sarrazin and Mike Conway all but guarantees Toyota the manufacturers’ crown, too.

That extended their lead over Audi to 40 points, with just 44 points at stake in the series finale at Sao Paulo next weekend.

Audi were always going to be favourites for the titles they’ve held since the WEC series began in 2012.

But the Japanese marque threw down the gauntlet to the German giants at the first race of the season, taking first and second places at the Six Hours of Silverstone.

They followed that up with a first and third at Spa in Belgium.

Audi struck back at Le Mans and Texas but Toyota went on to score successive wins at Fuji, Shanghai and now Bahrain.
