World Cup dreaming: the English coach hoping to lead Bahrain to the 2018 …

Miles away from the spotlight on the Premier League and Hodgson’s England team, the star of a young manager from these shores is on the rise.

On a small island in the Middle East, Anthony Hudson has been making history, a name for himself and starting to show why Harry Redknapp once called him a Jose Mourinho in the making.

And Bahrain’s national team boss Hudson, who is just 32, is determined to add to his growing reputation by leading them to their first ever World Cup in 2018 after landing a new two-year contract last month.

Hudson – son of ex-Chelsea, Stoke, Arsenal and England midfielder Alan – said: “Bahrain have been minutes away from qualifying for the World Cup in the past so I believe the next one is within our reach.

“Before qualifying for that starts in 2016 we have the Gulf Cup in November in Saudi Arabia and Asian Cup in January in Australia.

“Bahrain have never won the Gulf Cup and in this region is as big a deal as qualifying for the World Cup.

“There is a lot of national pride so that is a big tournament here for the Arabic people. Massive.

“When you talk to them about the Asian Cup and qualifying for the World Cup some say all they are interested in is winning the Gulf Cup.”
