Al Wefaq ploy to mislead UN

MANAMA: Opposition group Al Wefaq National Islamic Society is seeking to mislead the UN over the situation in Bahrain, it was revealed last night.

It has sent a confidential letter to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon seeking UN intervention, claiming deterioration in the human rights situation in the kingdom, sources told our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.

The move is seen as a bid to exploit the ongoing UN General Assembly session in New York.

It also comes against a backdrop of signs of rapprochement between the US and Iran, the sources said.

The letter was sent through the UN office in Bahrain, they said.

Its content has not been made public because the group fears it would expose its lies about being representative of popular public opinion, the sources added.
