A Bahraini court of appeals has sentenced nine anti-regime citizens, including youths, to life imprisonment in a political case.

The court also sentenced another citizen to 15 years in jail on Thursday, according to al-Wefaq opposition party’s website.

The nine Bahrainis come from the town of Bani Jamrah.

The Manama regime has attempted to target pro-democracy activists who have been subjected to various forms of repression and security measures.

Human Rights Watch has slammed the Bahraini regime over its crackdown on protests.

Courts in Bahrain are said to be playing a main role in supporting the crackdown by issuing long-term verdicts.

In September 2013, the 47 member states of the Geneva-based Human Rights Council expressed concern over the rights violations in Bahrain, stating that “the situation in Bahrain is still worrying.”

This comes amid public outrage and protests in all regions and provinces of Bahrain after the arrest of al-Wefaq Secretary General Sheikh Ali Salman.

Bahrainis have been protesting against the ruling Al Khalifa family since early 2011. Manama has used heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.
