Bahrain sets precondition for improving relations with Iran

MANAMA, June 30 (Xinhua) — Bahrain is keen to start a “new page” of relations with Iran if Tehran shows its commitment to nuclear disarmament and further stops meddling in the internal affairs of its neighbors.

Bahraini Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said so at a press conference after the 23rd European Union-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) ministerial meeting held here Sunday.

“We are always looking to start a new page of relations with Iran, which is our neighbor,” he said.

“We welcome the presidential election in Iran in which Hassan Rohani was elected,” the Bahraini minister said, while also noting that “The situation of Iran’s physical interference in Syria is escalating.”

The West and some Gulf Arab nations are accusing Iran of supplying sophisticated weapons to Damascus in its fight against the rebels.

He said the GCC’s stance on Syria is clear as it backs those living under aggression because of the internal crisis as well as the interference of external forces from Hezbollah and members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
